Under unfiltered natural light, the human face splits into extreme value contrasts: blinding specular highlights on raw skin and dense, deep cast shadows. In transparent watercolor, translating this intensity without creating a chalky, fragmented, or overworked surface requires absolute mastery of edge calibration and anatomical landmarks.

1. The Mechanics of Direct Sunlight on Facial Planes

When intense direct sunlight hits the head at an angle, the transition between light and shadow is accelerated. The artist must immediately separate the subject into two distinct visual zones:

  • The Light Family: Highlights, mid-tones, and light halftones where the white reflective ground of 100% cotton paper must remain pristine and luminous.
  • The Shadow Family: Core shadows, reflected ambient bounce, and sharp cast shadows that define the cranial structure underneath.
